Red light therapy sits in a suspicious category: a wellness device sold everywhere, promising a lot, with a name that sounds like a spa upsell. So it's genuinely surprising to report that the evidence here is, for the most part, real.
How it works.
The mechanism is specific, which is a good sign. Red light in the 630 to 660 nanometer range and near-infrared light around 810 to 850 nanometers is absorbed by chromophores in your cells' mitochondria. That absorption nudges up ATP production and sets off signaling that prompts fibroblasts to proliferate and lay down more collagen. It isn't heat, and it isn't magic; it's light your cell machinery happens to respond to.
The clinical results back the mechanism. A split-face randomized controlled trial found that red-light photobiomodulation reduced periocular wrinkle volume by roughly 30 percent (Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, 2023), and other controlled work has shown improvements in skin texture and collagen density.
The catch is the fine print: wavelength and dose decide whether you get an effect at all.

The evidence is real, but it's dose-dependent, and that's where consumer devices vary wildly. Effective studies use specific wavelengths, adequate irradiance, and consistent sessions. A weak mask used occasionally is not the same as the protocol that produced the results. So "red light therapy works" is true, and "this particular gadget will work" is a separate, unanswered question.
The honest frame.
Red light is a legitimate tool for stimulating collagen from the outside, better supported than most devices in its price range. But like every topical or external approach, it works on the skin's surface machinery, not on the internal terrain that sets how much collagen you're losing in the first place. Handle the drivers underneath, and the collagen you stimulate has a better foundation to hold.
